I am an internationally recognised expert in Respiratory Medicine, Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, with over 30 years Consultancy and Academic experience.​

  • Completed my MD in Nottingham in 1989 and spent a year as an MRC Travel Fellow at the CVRI in San Francisco before returning to Nottingham as a Lecturer, quickly being promoted to Senior Lecturer, then Reader in 1997 and Professor in 2000.

  • From 2004 to 2018 I was Head of the Division of Respiratory Medicine in Nottingham and expanded the Department into one of the top 3 or 4 Respiratory Departments in the country.

  • From 2008 to 2012 I was Director of the £6M Nottingham NIHR Biomedical Research Unit (BRU), one of only 3 respiratory BRU’s in England, leading cutting edge research in inflammatory airways diseases, lung fibrosis and lung infection.

  • From 2015 to 2020 I was Director of the £4.5M Nottingham MRC Molecular Pathology Node, one of 6 Nodes in the UK. This initiative brought together molecular pathologists, translational researchers, computer scientists and industrial partners to drive innovation in molecular diagnostics in Respiratory and Gastro-intestinal diseases.

  • From 2017 to 2020 I was Respiratory Theme Lead (and for 2 years Deputy Director) of the £24M NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).

  • NIHR Senior Investigator award 2019.

  • I have been part of a number of large national and international Respiratory Consortia such as UBIOPRED and COPD MAP and the FANTOM5 functional genomics consortium.

  • Over the last 30 years I have been principal or co-applicant on grants from MRC, Wellcome Trust, BBSRC, NC3Rs, Asthma UK, BLF, EU, US CFF, Industry and others of over £90M.

  • My research interests have been in airway cell biology (particularly the role of structural cells), lung infection, epigenetics and translational research in respiratory diseases (asthma, COPD, CF, pulmonary fibrosis) looking at the development of new treatments and or biomarkers.

  • I have published over 250 original articles/reviews/editorials on a wide range of respiratory topics. Publications cited over 16000 times, H-index 70. https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=dGEWgCcAAAAJ&hl=en

  • I have held numerous journal editorships (including Executive Editor of Thorax), and served on several national committees in my specialty.

  • I have served on numerous national and international grant committees including MRC and Wellcome. Recently I have been DHSC/UKRI COVID-19 Rapid Response Rolling Call expert review panel and the UKRI/DHSC Oversight Committee for Covid-19 Immunology.

  • I have been a practicing Consultant Respiratory Physician for over 30 years from 1990 to the present time all based at University of Nottingham NHS Trust with wide-ranging experience of Respiratory Medicine.

  • I have performed consultancy work for numerous large pharmaceutical companies and SMEs over the last 30 years.

  • I stepped down as Head of Division after 3 terms in office in 2018 and in August 2020 became Emeritus Professor.
